    Check-valve....Flapper V's Plunger

There has been quite a bit of discussion about which check valve is better, and whether the aerator pumps will push open a plunger style anyway.

I finally got around to starting my install and decided to test the functionality of the Plunger style check-valve I bought (not realizing there might be an issue) and was happy with my unscientific experiment.

I filled a 3 gal bucket about half way, attacked one of my plunger style c/v's to the outlet of the pump, dropped the pump in the bucket, and plugged it in. With in a couple of seconds, the bucket was empty. No problem pushing through the plunger.

Conclusion: if you got plunger c/v's, go ahead and use them, I think they will work fine. If you are looking to buy, go ahead and get the flapper style.

    Very Nice

And now we know. I was wondering that. Even though I returned the plunger c/v's and oredered some flapper's.
I'm on a boat man. I got my flippy floppies....

maybe you could do a modified test for me, take about say 10 feet of hose with air in it and check valve at one end and pump at the other, see if it still works, Im worried about the air pressure being too much and holding it back....or maybe Im just dumb

Not a stupid ??? at all sense air is compressable and liquid is not. In theory it would take more pump pressure to create enough air pressure, then it would take pure water pressure, to over come the spring tension.

Well, I put the check valve on the end on my pumps hose, which is about 6ft, and it worked fine.

What are using for ( which valve) check valves?

Sorry, not sure if I understand exactly what you are asking.

The check valves will be used to prevent the drain pump from filling the sac back up through the vent line. I have the vent T'd into the drain so I only have to use one thru-hull.

I will also use a check valve in the fill line to prevent the sac from emptying back through the pump.

Ya I was wandering where and what kind of valve you are using. Is it just a pvc valve? The ones I have seen are $30 a pop kinda of expensive. Have you found something cheaper.

I am plumbing my extra sacs into my factory system so they will fill auto of a switch and I dont want to add more holes. I built a new manifold for the pumps but need to plumb the drain and vent lines into the original ones

I got mine from www.flexpvc.com. I'm using 3/4" plumbing and the plunger type in-line check valves were $5 ea and the 3/4x3/4 barbed slip fittings (2 per valve) were $1.50 ea.

                      UPDATE

Well, now that my system is in and running, I have determined that the plunger style c/valves are not going to work

On the inlet side, there will be no broblems with the pump opening up the plunger, but on the vent side, the sac will fill with air and water pressure before the plunger unseats and vent. By this time, the pressure is already forcing water past the drain pump and out the thru-hull. The end result is no venting.

When I bought the plunger c/v's I was unaware of a potential problem, so I went with the plungers as there where few bucks ea. cheaper. So now I have 3 useless c/v's and will have to order 3 flappers and replace.

Other then this the system is running flawlessly and I only have a little touch up on the house routing and drain pump location.

I wondered about this after I bought the plunger style and thought it would take a pretty good amount of pressure to open them. Then I bought some flappers.

I had to switch my plungers out for flappers !!

CHP where did you purchase your flapper valves? Online?
