new RZ2 ballast bags question

I just got my boat a month ago and I'm gettin ready to install pumps and sacs in the rear comps. I found 18x20x32 sacs that claim about 425 each. they look to fit in real nice. Any tips on installing pumps would be welcome.

CP3 and myself are getting ready to finish out DIY ballast installs and I can say I drew alot of from both these write-ups

If you are going to go through the time/effort of plumbing in you sacs and pump, I would recommend to go ahead and do a bow sac also.

There is a lot of debate on where to place the pick up. the Rival type system used a through-hull scoop and the factory system uses a through-transom scoop. I am going with the through-transom.

Through-hull; fills on the fly but need gate valve or manual valve or the bags will keep filling. Gate valves seem to be failing after about a year, manual valves are cumbersome.

Through-transom; no need for gate or manual valve but can not fill above wake speed. Need 1 way check-valve or bags will drain out fill hose while on plane.

The third option that we have not discussed much as far as through hulls go, is to have a mushroom type through hull that is underneath the boat. That way the system can fill while under way, but the water is not forced into the manifold, like on a scoop. Both MC and Malibu have them like that. I think that I will seriously consider that on my next ballast install. Then I do not need a gate valve at all. I would still install a manual brass valve, but could leave it open 99% of the time, just closing it for an emergency.

Sorry for the hijack.... With the Tsunami pumps, how do you keep the water from draining back out of the bags without a gate valve? Is this where physics comes into play? I see the manifold that xpjim made and I assume that is for pumping water into the system but I would think that once you turn off the pump the remaining water in the intake tube would act as a siphon and then pull all of the water out of the bag (or as much as it could anyway) from the inlet on the top of the bag. Is that not true?

I used check valves. Water can only flow one way.

There are 2 types of check valves, swing or spring. Hardware stores in my area only carry spring. I used swing as they offer less resistance. I got mine from mcmaster carr

The ones that came with the rival system are swing type. They are sensitive to position, but I find that very easy to deal with. If the valve is on a flat surface, the hinge on the spring has to be at the top, so it swings shut. The valve is clearly marked which side up it needs to be. It just seems to me the spring would wear out after a while.

While cleaning my boat tonight I found out that you can't run the integrated bow sac in an RZ2, it has boards that close off the front section to the side sections Looks like you'll have to run 2 sacs, 1 in each side.

I have not filled my bow sack yet, but it looks like it will fit just right on the RZ2, I'll take a picture next week when I get in the water to test the System

It might be a week or two before I get the boat back. They are fixing some gelcoat stress cracks and some others warranty issues.
