I think I’ll try this as a new surfgate...

Holes in the boat get easier after the first one :-)
Be sure the hinge is stout. Angle mount plate on the gate may need to be stronger. I would be concerned it would just bend it over. Overall it looks good!

Just now noticed you have brackets on both side. I retract my statement about bending

Humble thought: Any possible way to get it more outboard and more at the angle of the boat’s side?

I did a ton of testing the past two years trying to build a surf gate. I didn't want to drill holes before I learned that it would work. I would suggest finding a temporary way to mount this before you finalize. In the end I found that although I could produce a reasonable wave with the various gate designs, I ended up discovering that nothing beats a suck gate. Moving it just a few feet forward up the hull would prevent the "over wash" that destroyed my wave. Every hull is different though, so try try try.

Just to be clear, I didn’t fabricate this piece. I happened to acquire it. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure what it was originally for, I only know that it was part of Critical Mass, a former highly modified Sea Fury that raced at Reno for a lot of years. They ended up restoring it back to stock and I got take any of the old race mods that I wanted, or at least the ones they didn’t want to keep. This thing was in one of the boxes.

I’ll definitely build some sort of temporary rig for testing. It will surely need to be angled to match the side of the boat.

I’m dissatisfied with my suck gate performance. The further back I mount it, the better it gets and the last version with the gate trailing the handle worked best on mine and my buddy’s 21v. That was my plan but, this old race plane part fits almost exactly perfect.

Look at the “goose slappers” that all the MB guys have done—-

A friend of mine made something very similar on his Calabria and it worked amazing. It was basically the same design except the horizontal part was lower down not quite at the bottom.

Looks like a cowl flap for engine cooling.
