Ballast 08 Z1 Ideas and help

2008 Z1 no factory ballast. I am thinking of just getting the kit eight.3 off of wakemakers. Two locker bags and a bow bag and pump. I need something that is flexible as in I love to wakeboard and would love to try wakesurfing but my wife also loves the boat and loves to bring her friends and all of their **** (coolers, bags full of snacks, change of clothes) on the boat with them. It is not just used purely for wakeboarding so I need something that I can use occasionally, when me and the boys go out. Is this the best option? Does anyone on here have any suggestions of maybe things they have done? I don't know how much it would cost to make my own system but I feel like that is the more expensive option of the two. Any insight would be appreciated.

Most people grow tired of manually filling after a season, and move to plumb the sacs in. So, you need to consider a sac that has a handful of more standard threaded fittings, for such future expansion. Otherwise, you are starting the investment over and setting aside hardly used sacs because they have no fittings and only a giant telescopic hole.

You can always NOT fill a sac full, but you cant ever add more water to a smaller sac. If you plan to surf, go with a sacs thats going to give you the needed weight for surfing, then under fill it for boarding. Soft sacs only consume locker space when filled.

Another option would to be to invest in some lead wake bags. They offer a lot more weight in smaller spaces on top of the bag.

How costly is plumbing my own system? The obvious things like tubing and fittings. How much are pumps? Is there anyone on here that can attest to how much there custom plumbed system cost?

Mike's the guy to talk to (chpthrill). He's the guy to talk to, and buy your kit from. He's helped out a lot of guys here and I've yet to hear anyone complain. In fact quite the opposite. Few other things besides cost. Are you ready, willing, and able to drill some decent sized holes in the bottom and sides of your boat?? Basic circuit knowledge, fuse protection, and wiring knowledge is a plus. Some fabrication may also be needed depending on your switches. All pretty basic stuff. If you aren't solid on the aforementioned, there are lots of us around to help you through it. Good luck!

I have an 08 Z1 as well. Bought in 2016 and was using the portable Tsunami pump to fill and drain the ballast bags. Had them plumbed in last winter and it was money well spent. Push a few buttons and you can go from cruising to surfing.

Mike helped me plumb additional bags into my factory system. He was a great help and very reasonable pricing. Definitely can't put a price on the customer service.

Mike is a great resource and provides great support after the sale. Figure on spending about $1500

my .02, also had an 08 z1 (just sold, upgraded to '18 R23). The Z won't surf with a lot of bow weight, so you may just stick a dude or some lead up there (150#) and call it good. Had it pretty dialed in for a decent knee-thigh high wave with plenty of push. I used two flyhigh ballast bags in rear lockers. We used to list the boat, which works, but since we were not plumbed in and have both goofy and regular riders (surf), the past couple of years we went with a swellwake plate (suction cups with plate that sticks out the side, like malibu surf gate, uses delayed convergence principle) and weighted the boat mostly even. this also works better if you're wakeboarding too, less moving, emptying, filling. 400# sacks in each locker and sometimes actually ended up putting our bow sack right in the middle of the floor to balance out the bow rise caused by most of the weight in the rear. Taps 2 at 7-8 and speed around 11, but you can play with it a little. just remember, there's no replacement for displacement, so kick up the weight if you can. I will say with the setup as described above and a full crew (5-6) it was pushing the limits of the marinepower engine, also not super friendly at the pump, but hey that's the cost of getting the best wave possible from your ride

I have an 07’ 22VE with the Marine power in it. I can attest that it’ll haul a lot more weight than that. My two rear locker bags are just shy of a 1000 each and I have another 450-550 in the bow. Usually have 5-6 people but I have had upwards of 10 at high altitude lakes (Denver is home but I boat in the mountains at 7500’ as well) and it hauls the mail. The prop choice is key when you start adding a lot of weight.

What prop are you using? I have the stock 13.5" x 16", but thinking of upgrading to 14" x 14.25" for wake surfing. Any thoughts? '07 20V.

If that was directed towards me Im running an acme 1235 which is close to the dimensions you’re talking. I believe it’s
14.5 x 14.25. It’s a great blend of low end for surfing and still keeping a good cruise speed at lower RPMS. I still love to wakeboard and explore the bigger lakes so I didn’t go with the tractor prop.

$1500 is probably for reversible pumps and excluding the ballast sacs. I'm going with the aerator pumps ... Tsunami 1200 for fill and 800 for drain. Expecting to pay around $900, excluding sacs, installing myself. My boat will be weighted evenly and using a wake shaper.

Given the small price difference difference between the T1200 and the T800, I dont see why you would want to use the T800 for draining, except we typically like to use twin T800 on the bow sac.

$1500 - $300 would get you 3 reversible impeller kits, sacs extra. Pretty complete kits.

A 14" like the 1433 is about as large as you can get on a 20V. Its a good upgrade to the 537 but but not the only one.
