Boat has installed a custom 3 bag water ballast system, 2 in rear and one port side under dashboard. Have used is successfully for surfing but wondering if too much strain on motor and tranny since boat not designed for surfing. Originally designed for skiing and boarding with TAPS. Motor has 650 hours. Anyone experiencing problems with using older v drives for surfing? Located at Lake Anna, VA. Thanks.

Engine wasn't designed for a boat... it doesn't care what it's pulling! jk...
As long as you can get to max rpm window while loaded, it is doing fine, just loafing around at 11mph vs what it has to go through at top speed. I learned to surf on that vintage boat over a decade ago, it's still running strong. He has stock prop.

I do a ton of surfing with my '99 21v, sitting at around 650 hours as well. Bought it 3 years ago and have averaged 100+ hours per season. No issues to date (knock on wood). Keep up with your transmission and V-drive fluids and you should be fine! I do run a lot of weight as well, probably around 1,500 lbs of ballast. She's working but does a great job with it - ends up at around 2,650 rpm while surfing which doesn't seem excessive to me.
