The RZ2 we just purchased has a factory-piped 2,000 lbs of ballast, I believe. I am pretty certain all of the ballast is in bags (above the floor). Bags are in each of the rear lockers, and the other two are in the bow, and relatively difficult to access, I believe. I'm just guessing that those rear locker bags do not exceed 700 lbs. each. I used way more than that to surf behind our '03 Moomba, so I think I need to go ahead and look into adding ballast. What's the best option? Are there bags that are direct replacements, and simple to install. I'd like to do the rear bags, first, and then worry about the front, later. I'd like to get a surf setup without having to throw a pump over the side of the boat, but looks like I'll be doing that in the short term.

2011 RZ2 Ballast Upgrade Question

Super,
In 2011, the factory ballast could have consisted of:
No ballast
Base level - 400 bow, two 250 hard tanks one in each locker below false floor
surf level - base level + two each 350 soft sacs in lockers.
pro level - surf level but with two 400 bow sacs
So, step 1 is to confirm which ballast level you or if its possibly all or partial aftermarket.
If your ballast is the surf or pro level with the stock 350 sacs, then yes, there is a plug-n-play upgrade to a 1200 lbs sac.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

The sacs are actually in parallel. Fill flow fills both sac and tank. Sac gravity drain to tank, drain pump connected to hard tank.
Along the outside bottom edge of the sac, you should find two ports going into the floor panel. On the top outer edge of the sac, you will find 2 other hose connections. The OEM sac is kinda wedge shaped and has anchors that tie it to the side of the boat. Anything else would be aftermarket.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

Dont know if yours is the same, but I have a 2013 RZ2. My 2013 has hard and soft tanks in the back. You are gonna love this boat. This boat is not good at just one thing. This boat will do it all. I have the surf ballast. However before you start upgrading ballast we need to know what it is your wanting to do. When it comes to wakeboarding it has more than enough weight. I never fill my ballast up for that. When it comes to surfing it depends on what you want. I normally have 4 to 8 people on my boat. I personally like the long wake. So, in saying that you might want more in the front. The tallest and longest wave my boat has ever had was when i had 5 girls sitting on the front one driver two guys in the back an two of us surfing. We had room for atleast one more surfer. So i would talk to chpthril about what kind of wake you want first.

I am a wakeboarder that is starting to surf. I'd like to get some extra ballast in the rear, but don't want to overdo it, or have it lopsided, since wakeboarding is the priority. I'm going to try and put sumo sacs in each locker. I already have one 750, and will just get another. I don't mind filling up an additional bag, when I want to surf, by throwing a pump over the side, and that's what I plan to do.

I have this same boat and would recommend the upgrade to chpthril's 1,200# sacs in the rear -- they are very easy to swap out (definitely plug-n-play). On the starboard side, you won't get the full effect of the 1,200# sac unless you remove the built-in cooler behind the seat. I had my dealer do that - relatively simple process of cutting it out and smoothing the cut edges. In its place, I have a soft-sided AO cooler I keep under the bow cushion.
If you do the larger rear sacs, I would also recommend installing a cross-over pump (again, chpthril can hook you up with everything you need). It cuts down the switch time dramatically.
One other note with the larger rear sacs. Once I installed them, I got passive draining. I crossed over the drain and vent lines, and was still getting the draining, which we finally figured out was being pushed through the fill lines. I ended up installing check valves on the fill lines, and that did the trick. There's an issue with where to place the check valves relative to the split that sends lines to the hard tanks and bags. I can't remember the details of that now, but I think I discussed it in a prior thread you can look up.
I love the boat, but sometimes I have an issue with wave length -- it can be a little short and steep for some riders' tastes (particularly on the starboard side). Weight up front helps. I only have the 400# u-shaped sac in the bow (came with the "surf" package, I think). The pro package had two separate 400# sacs up there, but I didn't want to lose the mid-ship storage (and my sub box in front of the driver would all but negate the larger sac on the starboard side). I try to compensate by putting people up there (as mentioned in a previous post).
I don't know if they are still selling the Convex VX, but if so, it's something else you can consider. I got it because, again, I wanted to try to get a longer wake. It definitely helped on the port side. The starboard side is still a work-in-progress as I am getting prop wash when I take the TAPS below 5.
Good luck and enjoy the boat.
