Effect of Convex vx on ballast placement

    Hey there !

I just came back in the sport after a 7 years stop and I just bought a nice 2013 RZR with the convex vx installed and surf ballast option.

I'm playing with the boat to try to have the nicest surf wave. We are usually only 2 adult (160lbs + 110lbs) and 2 kids (2x40lbs) on the boat, so I need a lot of ballast weight. For now we only surf port side.

I allready changed the back port bag for a Fly High Tige 59" W004p (770lbs i stead of the stock 350) and it helped a lot. But I need more...

1 - Here's my point... I have the convex vx plate installed, so the boat surface is approx. 24" longer... This additionnal 24" is added behind the ballast. Do you think it act like if I moved the ballast 24" forward on a boat with no convex vx ? Does the vx plate contribute to move more weight forward ?

2 - I can't see the access for the front ballast...is there a way to get access to it ? I've heard people putting 2 x 400lbs sacs in front, what's the verdict? Do they fill enough ? Is there a real gain over the stock ballast ? Is there a solution to hide more ballast in front of the RZR ?

3 - I want your input on my next installation. I want to add a sac in the ski locker (w704 370lbs) I would T the drain with my w004 sac, plug the vent of the w004 sac on the fill of the w704 sac and plug the vent of the w704 on the vent on the hull. This way when the w004 sac is going the be full, it will transfer in the w704. I know this may be long to fill, Ill check later to add a pump if it's too long...what do you think ?

    Thanx !

    Whats a ski locker?

    Why not the longer W005?

Your overflow vent reconfig with the W704 may fill, but it will be about 20 minutes and it will not drain.

I do not see moving wight forward to be the solution for the CX. IMO, it needs more weight and further back if possible.

RZR doesn't have any ski locker I know of and I own one. Front ballast is easy to access you just pull out the black dividers. If you open the observer seat and look forward you will see the black divider(black plastic below the seat level). They have stainless screws, just pull them out. But to answer the question the 400 pretty much fills the space. The bigger bags are for the bigger boats(RZ2,Z3, RZ4).

        Thanx for the answers !
Sorry wrong expression..by ski locker I mean the storage under the passenger seat on the port side...

I would go with a w005 but I allready have a w004 maybe Ill try to sell the w004 and get the w005....but I also want another bag under the passenger seat...I know it will take forever to fill, if its too long i will had another pump..but I don't understand why it would not drain ? By sharing the drain with a T, the w004 and w704 should drain in the hard tank and the hard tank pumped outside ? The hard tank is below the 2 sacs, so they should drain by gravity ?

Some types of boats have ski lockers in the middle of the floor, a longish door that opens to allow storage of long items along the keel of the hull. But v-drive boats typically put the fuel tank there so there's no traditional ski locker on them.

Yes, the 350# surf does gravity feed down into the top of the in-floor tanks through 2 bottom ports on the outside edge of the sac. With a sac in the flow, under the seat and forward of the surf sac and in-floor tank, I do not see it gravity draining, unless you got the bow really high.

In my RZR, I enlarged the drain hole under the bow cushion and was able to fit 150lbs in Lead Wake bags. I have another 570lbs in Lead Wake and Pop Bags spread throughout the bow.

There is also room in the rear battery compartments for a couple hundred pounds. This is a great location as it is the farthest back you can get weight in the boat.

Houston where is the hole you talk about? I looked under my very front bow cushion and its solid. I think I recall seeing a small hole under there when we looked at a 2012 R20. Is that where you are talking? If so the 2013's don't have that. I wish I did to make sure the sacs are filling all the way and staying forward. Plus like you said, great spot to slide some lead in.

Here's a pic of mine at the factory. I just marked and used a jigsaw to make the hole larger.

Here's an update on my new installation... (RZR 2013 with convex VX)

I concentrated my effort on the port side...
I switched my original sac in the back port locker for a W004 Custom Tige 54"
Then I installed a #705 sac Under the port passenger seat.

The new 705 sac share a drain and a vent with the w004 sac
I put a "T" on the front port sac pump and plugged the 705 sac on the T with an on/off valve.

When I want to fill both front and 705 side sac, I leave the valve open and they both fill way before the w004 in the corner.
If I want to wakeboard, I just close the valve and only the front sac fill.

The 705 side sac drain very good. When I drain while the boat is standing stil, I have maybe 30lbs of water left in the sac. If I drain while moving with the nose a little up, it drains completly.

The only thing I have left to do is crossing over the drain and vent lines because I have passive draining...

Here's a pic of the wave (and my wife).
                      Both front ballast full (400lbs)
                      Port hard tank full 250lbs
Port W004 sac semi-full (passive draining) approx. 650-675lbs
Port side sac #705 near full approx.475lbs
Me driving in the seat (165lbs)
2 kids (35lbs each) jumping around in the boat
Usual stuff around the boat (towels, small cooler etc..)

                      Speed 10.0mph
                      Taps 3
                      list of 10 degree

This weekend we had 2 more adults in the boat (apprx 150lbs each) and I placed them one in each back corner. I bumped my speed to 10.6 and taps at 5. The wave stayed super clean and remained the same height. The pocket was larger but had a little less push but the overall "play zone" stretched by a couple of feet !
