    20i ballast

    Hey,

I'm going to add some ballast to my 06 20i this winter. I'd like to be able to surf and would like to know what the min/max weights required for my small DD. My rear locker could hold up to an 800lb bag and I'll have another (size TBD) on the surf side of the motor box.

Can I get some opinions on proper weight? If I don't need to fill my rear with 800 I won't.....but the space is there. I'm also considering plumbing it in with a disconnect so I can easily remove the one in the boat.

    I'm open for suggestions,

    Thanks
    Brian

I think 800 lbs in the way back of a 20i might be trouble. When I had a DD I ran a 450 in the rear locker and you didn't dare back off the throttle to quick. That was before surfing so with the size of a surf wave consider that.

The quick disconnect for the inboat sac is a great idea. Would you run lines to each side so you can switch over to goofy also? I have a son who is a lefty so we have to switch. Even if you don't have a goofy footer now it's a good idea to be prepared because sooner or later you will.

Mine has a lot of freeboard and my skim deck is still about 3 inches out of the water with a full tank of gas and 4 people in the boat. If I could get away with 450ish in the trunk and another 450 by the box I'd be stoked. Didn't think about plumbing it to both sides......thanks.

It might handle 800, never know till you try. Most of us would agree that more is better with surfing. Try it with a hand pump to make sure your good before you plumb it in. But you always need to keep safety in mind. Big surf waves equal big wash against the back of the boat when you throttle down. I think thats why you are seeing all these popular surf boats getting taller at the stern. DD's do not have that height. What you have to consider is when your buddy's are driving for you to ride...not when your driving, you will know to throttle down gently.

But I would think with a 20 ft DD you would be good with 900 right in the back corner(450locker+450 surf side). Probably going to be tough to find someone with direct experience as thats not a super common boat. Maybe try posting up on wake world and see what someone with a similar boat is running. 800 in the rear locker then another 450 immediately in front of it just seems like alot for a small DD to me.

I've been running both sides full and then using people for list (vab). With a full tank of fuel, that puts me in at around 1200# in the trunk. I also have my old locker sac that I can run in the walkway with ~300-400# in it. Of course our boats are quite different but, that's my D-Drive set up.

Plumbing it in is the only way to go. Chpthril is the man to talk to.

Here's my pump set up. This was definitely the easy part.
