    Ballast Drain and Vent

Just getting ready to install ballast in our boat. We are doing the 4 fill through hull and 4 drain using the Rule 405 FC pumps. We are not doing a manifold, instead we are drilling 4 holes in the hull for the pumps to mount there. The bags we are going to use up front only have 2 holes in them. One on bottom and one on top. We will have the drain pump on top and the fill on bottom. Will their be any problems pumping out? We saw how new Tiges use individual pumps so we were wanting to go that direction. Thanks for any help

Some more informed will chime in soon but I would think on your bow sacs you will need to use a reversible pump to fill/drain if you have only two outlets, you will need to utilize the top outlet for venting

You can add fill/drain ports to the bags if you need to, I'm doing that for my bags in my lockers.

I would suggest filling through the top port and drain from the bottom. Aerator pumps are not self-priming, so the drain pump will not prime if attached below the water line, i.e. the bottom of the sac. 2nd, I do not like to do any ballasts setup with a means to vent the sac. No matter what, the sac will accumulate air. also, I dont like the sacs to build to much pressure if it can be avoided. The ideal aerator setup requires 3 ports: fill, drain and vent.

Mike go back and read your post. Must have been a long day. jharrington. There were a few missused words. Fill from the top. Vent from the top and drain from the bottom. chpthril is the man who knows.

I saw the priming issue with the aerator on top to drain, but wouldn't it still allow it to vent through the drain pump when filling?

I know of a shop locally that always puts the aerators on top of the sacs on the vent. So same hole for vent and drain. Interesting concept. They claim it makes filling easier and priming easier. I like having the pumps on the back of the bag personally.

Water will be forced through the drain pump once the pressure builds enough, but the air will be trapped at the top of the sac.

*EDIT* The above pertains to air not venting through the drain pump when said drain pump is mounted in a logical location below the water line of the sac on a bottom port.

Aerator pumps will let the air vent out just fine. They have no resistance and air should escape just fine as long as the pump is screwed into a high point in the sac. This would work, but I personally don't like it that much.
