If your not tired of ballast install threads....

locker view.JPGIf your not tired of ballast install threads I have one more for you. It is definately not as detailed and complicated as many others in this section but thought I would post since it is a little different.

I have a 2010 Z1 with the factory ballast (400 single bag up front + 2X250 rear hard tanks). I have also been using a 750 fat sac for surfing that I manually fill. Decided to add a bigger (ever heard of going smaller and plumb in. However, I have a wrap on my boat and the vent/drain thru hulls are wrapped.thru hull wrap.JPG

To eliminate the need for thru hulls: this is what I came up with...

    1. Use the fill pump for the port side leg of the bow sac and capping the port on the sac. Obviously this not only eliminated the need to put in a new pump but the need for installing a new switch as well. Understanding that this will increase my fill time for this sac. However, the surf sac is still much larger requiring a longer fill time anyway.

    2. Use existing port bow drain for my drain and fill for the surf sac. Put a Y in the vent/drain lines coming off the new surf sac about three feet outside the rear locker. Ran the drain/vent line high up the port side gunnel to common port bow thru hull.

    Ready to test....

Let me know if I missed anything!!!

Goodies for the job were from Chpthrl. Mike was great to work with. Not only was everything as describe, on time, complete, but Mike took several calls from me when I had dumb questions.

Here is a pic of the sac (which I hope to get about 1000-1100lbs out of...

I never get tired of the ballast installs. I would love to see some wave pictures when you get around to it.

+1 on chpthril being very helpful on the ballast installs

Got the boat out today to test the new system. All in all it worked pretty well. Really only have one issue to fix...since I y'ed the drain/vent the bag does not completely empty. I am getting backflow down the vent side. Probably have about 75lbs of water left in the bag. To fix I am going to tie my vent into the vent for the starboard vent. I think that will fix the problem. Still working on dialing in the wave but here is a pic. this is will the port hard tank (250), port surf sac (about 1100), and bow (400). Had taps on 4 at about 11mph. Did not surf it since it was pretty cold and the water was very turned over with all of our recent rain (at this point I will take the brown water since it this was the first time since the end of August I could put my boat on my lake).

Any ideas for reducing the prop wash? I must say it is tons better with the new surf sac but I would still like to reduce if possible.

Sounds like some of the drain flow is running back into the sac via the vent line. Is that what you are thinking? May need to add a check valve to the vent line between the Y and the sac.

Also, some of that left over water may not be draining back to the tank. A trick is to get the bow up by running the TAPS all the way and run about 10 mph when the sac is getting close to emptied.

Chp, yes that is exactly what is happening. Do you think I am better off adding a check valve or y'ing into my vent on the opposite side?

I would add a c/v. its a simple as cutting the line and splicing it it. And it should be effective.

Made the mods to my install today. Place a check valve on the vent on the y'd vent/drain to prevent backflow and it works perfect (thanks CHP).

Since my bow bag would not drain fully I replaced the drain pump on the port leg and y'd the vent drain with a check valve. Then spliced the wires to the starboard drain pump. This bag now drains fully as well. Should be good to go now.

I haven't had the boat back on the water yet to play with the settings. Hopefully this week. Should be able to adjust the speed and now weight to remedy. Any other suggestions?

Are you running a 1pc bow sac or is it two seperate?

The speed looks a little high too. I would try knocking it back around 10.5 and play with the taps. Then do the same at 10 and see if you can get it out. At least to get a baseline.

Does it have the new style platform?
