I used soap, a heat gun and a pair of Mechanix gloves. You heat it, let it cool to the point where it's still pliable but not quite stiff and then twist it on. It's a pain in the azz!

Agreed. Perhaps we should build a dummy of the guy who originally chose 1.125 inch hose and BURN IT IN EFFIGY.

I tried heat, I tried soap, and nothing helped. I was nearly blistering my hands and I could not get it to go. It is the spiral ribbed hose like this:

Are you just going to tell me to put down my purse and take off my earrings, or is there something peculiar about the way I am doing it?
You gotta lube! Even heated, it will not go. Heating it allows it to stretch, but the friction of the rubber will not allow it to slide over the plstic fitting. I use a dab of 5200 since I already have it open diong an install. The hose slides right over.

Ok so the premium hose sucks for stretching compared to the normal stuff. I used the normal through my whole system and it worked great. Just heat gun and a little bit of elbow grease

            http://www.wakemakers.com/wye-3-4-inch-fitting.html

Wakemakers says that you do not need a check valve as you won't get retrograde flow back into the other arm of the wye. Seems like if the outflow pump pressure were enough, that you would get backflow. Wakemakers says to use the Y to tie in overflow and dishcharge hoses from the same sack. I cannot help but think that there would be some recirculation, but does anyone else have any experience with these? I was anticipating using separate overflows, but might consider it if I can find one of these in a 1 inch version.
You may get some drian back into the sac, but how often will you be using that bilge pump? You could run both the bilge pump and ballast drain pump at the same time, then no drain back. I would be more worried about the ballast coming aback into the bilge, so I would probably put a check-valve in the bilge line if it were me.

...and stays there, forever and ever! Which is probably OK in most situations, but for those of us who continually experiment that would be bit of a problem.

Not really, just remove the clamp, twist the hose and the 5200 is broken free.

YUP. The guy I talked to had put a check valve in the bilge line so that the overflow from the ballast tank did not go into the bilge, but did not put another check valve on the backend of the Y to stop flow back into the tank. I suspect that he gets flow into his ballast tank, but does not get enough to realize it is there.

Am I really anal if it sounds bad to me to have bilge water in my clean ballast tanks?

Sounds like soap and water ain't gonna cut it. I get the message.

No, not at all! The mussel inspectors would thank you for that too!

                          Heat gun vs. blow dryer?

Stooopid question: I have been using a blow dryer (not a cheap one, and that makes my wife happy) and it heats up the hose enough that it is too hot to touch, but I wonder if it actually needs to be a little hotter than that even. Not being a cheap blow dryer means that it is quite hot.

Last night I gave myself a blister with the KY and blow dryer. I was still unable to get the ribbed hose on that over the side fitting for the Tsunami pump.

I had some old spa hose laying around, which is not nearly as flexible, but for the same reason, it allows much more force to push it on. I was able to get it on, after nearly giving myself a hernia.

Maybe my hose needs to get hotter than what the blow dryer is getting it? Because I am not looking forward my ballast project at all. Hoping to get cracking on it tomorrow.

All this talk of hoses and happy wives and KY Jelly and ribbed hoses and needing to get our hoses hotter... we are still talking about ballast systems, right?

Sounds like it's plenty hot to me. Are you trying to do this alone? If so, my first suggestion is get a helper. I mentioned having a second person earlier in this discussion, and trust me it made a WORLD of difference.

Did you stretch the heated end of the hose with pliers? That was the other big piece of the puzzle.

                            Let us know....

Unless you have pansy doctor hands too hot to touch should be hot enough. I usually heat the hose to a point that I can easily pinch the reinforced coils. And only 1 to 1.5 inches down. You may be getting the hose hot, but not the coils.
