Duffy, Just wondering what ballast bag you currently use in the bow of your boat. I know at one time you had to fly high bags. I am currently running a plug and play 800 pound sack in the walkway and lead under the seats. My next project will be to install bow bag/bags on pumps and switches but want to know what the best direction is. The current setup works good for surfing but is a pain when running empty as the bow sits real low with all the lead in there. Wakemakers has a custom sack but it's only 450lbs. That's way less than I run know. Also, what prop are you running. I've upgraded once but still don't have enough pull to get to speed with my boat full of water and lead. Thanks

Currently I am using some smaller dual bow ballast bags, they might hold 250 or so pounds (huge guess), then 50 pounds of lead in the nose. Wakemakers has a new bigger direct fit bow bag. It looks very nice.

Here is a project I started a few years ago, but never really finished. I had some aluminum rails fabricated. The engine tray is nice and snug and now the whole thing looks more modern. If I keep the 24v, I will redo the divider walls out of that new stronger thinner stuff that boats now come with.

I love the added storage I get

Did you build the engine tray or did you buy it somewhere? The bummer about running big bags is that you lose all the storage space in the bow and under the back seats. I'm always looking for easy places to store ropes and such. So you are only running 300lbs up front? Do you run anything mid ship or just your 1800's in the back corners and the 300 Up front? Also, did you upgrade the prop at any point? I have read a lot online about the 1235 Prop but don't know if that is the way to go.

Thats some engine tray off ebay. Here are the details, it will not just fit, has to be trimmed, engine locker dividers have to be changed, and you need rails added.

Malibu Boat Storage Tray 5441186 | Black 34 7/8 x 28 7/8 Inch Plastic. Great Lake skipper is where I bought it.

I have a 5 blade prop. I turn 2900-3100 rpms while surfing and it sips gas. Dual sacs up front, no clue on how much they hold?

I just ordered the tray. I pulled the trigger on the wakemakers bow bag as well. I'll probably just run in plug and play this summer and then install a two way pump this winter. Thanks for your help.

                Duffy,

What's that 5 blade prop that you using? I called Acme and they sized me up with a 1619. 13.5" x 13.75" .075" cup. I have 2x 1800# sacs and 500# lead in back and 650# in the bow. My rpms are running around 4K. I would like to get that down a little lower.

                  Here is my original post

Acme 2133- 5 blade 12.7 mph 2900-3000 rpms- Boat sounds so weird. Like a low singing roar. Gosh the best way to describe it is the boat doesn't care about the ballast. Literally could have surfed 18mph with it. It jumps to speed so fast, and the getting to speed is very smooth. It's hard to describe. Boat held speed perfectly through chop and waves. Also gas consumption was only 8 gallons in a couple hour set. So that was nice! I think 5 blades are a game changer for surf boats. Wave is nice and clean.

Duffy, what is the top speed with no ballast? Just wondering. I did the acme propfinder program and it matched me up with the 1619 as well. I wonder why they are pushing those over this five blade. Any idea?

                      Top speed is slow

I rarely drive the boat faster then 25mph. 5 blades are loved or hated. The other part of the equation is how you are weighting your boat and using taps?

I have a 537 now and our top speed is around 35 with no bags full. I still have around 1000#'s of lead in though. I'm not too worried about going fast but 30 would be pretty nice. We have an 8 mile trip to our dock from the boat ramp. Do you think your boat will go 30 with the five blade? Also, what surf system do you end up going with? I have been pondering one for the last year but the cost is a little restrictive. I have seen a ton of DIY builds for surf systems online but no one really every says that they are really happy with them. Thanks again for sharing your build. It has been really helpful.

Props are a give and take, you gain low end, but lose top end. 30mph would be too high of rpms.

I made my own surf system, it's a gate style. I also make and will sell a surf controller soon.

I moved from a 537 to a 1617 on my 22v. I'd never go back, it's like a whole new boat. I also skied at 32mph with it but can't remember the rpms. The performance improvement is well worth the losses in top speed. I always wanted to try a 5 blade prop but never got around to it before selling the 22v. I was very happy with my diy surf system as well.
