    Ballast Q's

Q#1 When a manifold is made to run 2 Johnson reversible pumps, if the intake is off set closer to one outlet more than the other, is it going to make a big differences?

Q#2 I was planning to take power to the ballast switches with a 8ga power wire, then a 12ga direct to pumps. Will this work? Do I have to use relays?? With the reversible pumps I have no idea how or if it can be done?

Heres some info from the pump manual

    Wiring dimensions
    (based on 3% voltage drop)
    Wire size Max wire
    lenght* in m
    _________________12V___ 24V
    2,5 mm² # 14 AWG 2,7.....11
    4 mm² # 12 AWG...4,4.....17,6
    6 mm² # 10 AWG...6,6.....26,3
    10 mm² # 6 AWG....11
    16 mm² # 4 AWG....17,6
    25 mm² # 2 AWG....27,4
*The wire length is the total distance from
the battery to the pump and back to the
battery. It is recommended to use a relay to
    shorten the main leaders.

Q#3 I think I know the answer but on the Johnson reversable pumps there is a grower, black wire and a red. Could a single pole on-off-on switch work or does it have to be a double pole??

Q#4 When using a 2 pump Tsunami system do the bags passivily fill even thought the switch is off?

    Thanks,

    Q1 - off-set intake OK

Q2 - Fused 8ga to the switches and then 12ga to the pumps OK

Q3 - You need a 6 terminal DPDT switch to reverse the motor. 7 terminals if you want lights in the switch. I think you only need to use the red and black for the motor. The third, maybe a green, is for grounding the pump body when using to transfer fuel.

Q4 - yes, aerator pumps can passive fill or drain. Hose routing, anti-siphon valves and check-valves are sometimes needed to prevent this. Ive even known the impeller pumps to passive fill/drain when used with a scoop (forward or backwards).

I have designed and installed 3 aerator systems and I don't use anti-siphons. I use check valves on everything and that seems to work perfectly. The folks at wakemakers say they are needed but I never found that to be true.

It depends on the location of the bag in the boat, and it's relative height compared to the fill pumps. Check valves will usually work in every scenario.

Is the norm to use plastic or chrome thru hulls for discharge and vents? Any reason why?

            Thanks

              Hey guys,

The Tsunami 800 pumps... do they have the same thread as the 3/4" elbows, couplers, etc that you would typically find at Home Depot?

              Thanks

I use Chrome, SS and glass reinforces w/SS face. No issues with any.

So these pumps will not screw into a shut off value that is inturned screwed in the the thu-hull?

Not necessary, just need to match the threads.

With the Tsunami or rule pumps the draw is only 3 or 4 amps.

Is it really necessary to use relays? Seems like extra work thats not needed?

No. A typical Carling rocker switch is rated for 20A. Thats more then enough to handle a couple pumps.

when putting the components together is it better to use alittle 3M4000 on the threads or teflon tape or pipe dope?

For below the water line, I like to use marine sealer/adhesive.

For all the pumps in the rear of the boat ground wires can just be daisy chained? 14ga?
