Help: Fly High size for 22ve.

    Hi all,
This last Sept. I got a screaming deal on a brand new 2008 22ve from my local dealer. It didn't come with any factory ballast and the wake is good for wakeboarding, but surfes only decent for lighter people with 5-6 in the boat. I am 6'6" and 250 lbs and I am not one of the light ones! I know ChpThril has posted saying to put a W705 in each rear locker (60x26x10 for 650 lbs.) and the W706 for the bow (54x54x54x12 triangle for 1,000 lbs.).

I pose a few questions here. Why use the W705 in each rear locker instead of the W707? Is it because the W707 (50x20x20 for 750 lbs.) won't fit with it being too tall to fit under the angled forward wall of the locker? If not it seams that the W707 would be a better option. the W701 sounds good too (42x16x16 for 400 lbs.) but I assume it doesn't hold enough weight. How far forward (ie how much storage space will I lose for the underseat space) does the W705 go (an answer other than 60" would be appreciated ).

The next question is about the weight in the front. As opposed to doing the W706 and making the front seat/filler unusable for people, is there anything that would fit in the walkway under the filler cushion and provide enough weight? I was thinking something along the lines of the W703 (48x12x12 for 260 lbs.) and putting another person or two in the front while surfing. Is that even worthwhile/provide enough weight or is it best to stick with the sac to fill the entire bow?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am not able to measure the compartment since I have the boat at the stereo shop getting the WS stereo components installed .

If any of you members sells the Fly High sacs and Tsunami pump let me know and I can get the stuff from you. Oh yeah, not looking to plumb in the system, just manually fill it.

    Thanks for your help!

I am by no means a ballast expert but here is what we do In my 22ve: we dont add any weight for wakeboarding. As for surfing I use a Custom 1000lb sack that came from Chpthril and no weight up front. I do have a integrated bow sack but haven't seen the need to use it yet. Here is a good thread that talks about the sack I use.

As far as loosing storage it is all about what you are trying to achive. For us we want the best surf wake possible so the underseat storage when the sacks are filled is gone but we still have plenty of room in our 22ve for everything we need.

I can measure my v-drive storage today if you don't get the answer but you will still have a little storage left with the W705 but not much!

We tried doing the W701 but did not achive much of a surf wake out of them.

As far as manual filling I hear ya I tried to avoid it as long as I could and I am done with that. I am working on my Ballast install over the next few weeks and I just want to push buttons going forward.

      Majestic,
Thanks for the info on that. Does the custom sac extend all the way forward to basically eliminate all underseat storage up to the pilot's seat? All in my crew surfes goofy so that's where it would go. How long does it take to pump up? That's nice to hear form you, as well as some other posts, that the 22ve doesn't care much for weight in the bow.

      Thanks,
      Bryce

I did edit my post above.

I am also a goofy surfer and the 1000 lb sack extends all the way to the end of the underseat storage.

As far as fill times it depends on the pump last year I used a t-800 for the fill and empty all on one line (I will get you a picture later today) and I would also use my t-1200 to suppliment and I could fill the 1000 lbs in about 4 minutes.

          My 2 cents worth.
          1. Talk to Chpthrl. He is a tremendous resource.
          2. Last year I wanted more ballast, so I went with manual fill for the first season. We enjoyed wakesurfing so much, we plumbed the extra sacs in the off-season as I got tired of the manual filling

4 minutes isn't bad at all, but lets wait and see what I say next year. So from what I am getting from you and reading the link about the custom sac, it's pretty much not worth messing with bow sacs unless nothing else works? How do I order one, just call ChpThril? Was the issue you were having with your transmission from the weight load, or an unrelated problem?

            Thanks,
            Bryce

Ya 4 minutes is not bad but you have to throw 2 pumps overboard and baby sit them!

Get a hold of Chpthril he will get you squared away.

I did put 400lbs in the bow once to see how it worked and i did not see much benifit.

The transmission issue is still undiagnosed. The boat is going in for service in a few weeks to see if we can figure it out but I think I have a transmission leak somewhere and the when the fluid gets low something has to be grinding.

I am going to see my boat in a few minutes I will send you a picture of the pump set up I used last year.

Because of the W707's 50" length, it will extend under the seating some and when filled, the 20" height will be taller then the under seat area. Due to this, it will not fully fill to the 750lbs. My guess is about 600+. The W705 is longer, wider, but not as tall. It will extend under the seat more, but will not be restricted by the under-seat height as the W707 will, so in the end, the net weight will be about the same.

Since that last post, Kerlee and I have worked up a custom cube that fills the entire v-drive storage without losing any under seat storage. It look to fill to about 600lbs.

The next question is about the weight in the front. For bow weight, the W712 integrated bow sac will fit under the bow seats and fill to about 600lbs. Most people like the Ve surf wake with out any added bow weight, but adding some will lengthen the pocket. A W713 is also a great fit for the walk-way.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am not able to measure the compartment since I have the boat at the stereo shop getting the WS stereo components installed .

                I can assist here also.

The custom surf sac is about 88" long. So yes, it will take up under seat storage when filled.

                  Chp,
Thank you for your reply. I think I read somewhere that you said adding weight to the front of the 22Ve will add unwelcomed stress to the hull. correct me if I've misspoken. I have basically come to the conclusion that I need to get the 1000 lb custom sac from you and the 1200 GPH Tsunami pump. Do you suggest I also get the 260 lb W703 for the walkway? Does it minimally improve pocket length, or enough to spend 180 or whatever it costs to get it? How do I contact you to order and how long will it take to receive it?

                  Thanks again,
                  Bryce

Dont think it was me. I dont think it hurts anything. As far a adding bow weight for surfing, here is what I would do. I would use people weight to see if you like the effect bow weight has on the front, and how much. Then you know what kind of weight you need in ballast, then we can figure out how to you there in sacs.

I sent you a PM (private message)

Thanks to everyone for the information. Today I placed an order with ChpThril for the custom surf sac, Tsunami 1,200 pump, and while I was at it an ACME 1235 prop and puller kit. Now if only the water at Tahoe was warmer than 45 degrees I'd be in business!

                        Bryce,

I forgot to send you these pictures yesterday on my manual pump install. I got this idea from another member and it worked pretty good. It has 2 Tsunami T-800's one on each end of a piece of 3/4" hose with a ball valve. 1. When you want to fill: plug in the fill pump open the ball valve.
                        2. When full: close the ball valve place pump on top of sack.
                        3. To empty: plug in drain pump and open ball valve.

although it did work well after one season of manual filling I am done with that.

Heres a thought that I have. Im not sure if its gonna work. I ordered a custom surf sac today from chp. Im thinking since I never use my front u shaped ballest sac, Im thinking about buying some hose and extending it to my new custom sac in the rear of my boat. What do you think? Will it work? That way I can just hit the switch and whala. No more manual fit.
