I’m still learning this whole wave setup thing, and have a long ways to go.. I feel like the best looking waves don’t always necessarily ride the best, either.. up until the last couple of years, we’d just cram as much weight on the rider side, usually with bodies, as we could, and surf whatever was there..

It feels pretty steep, on the wave, a lot of hitting the brakes, and some dings on the transom, and broken noses of boards.. I’ll get some more testing in next weekend..

Having my ballast system not leaking, not having a bilge full of water, and a prop that will get me out of the hole, is making things a little easier, for sure.. think it’s just going to be some tweaking now... and our crew varies so much, we usually have to adjust on the fly..

That's not PNP bags either, right? I'll be selling my 350 pound PNP bags here in a week or so if you're interested. Save you some lead weight.

Do those go in the rear storage compartments?? Are all boats set up to hook straight in to those?? How much of the storage do they eat, if they go in there?? Possibly dumb questions, but I can be a dummy!! I may have to try and sell the lady on eating up storage, if that’s the case..

They do go in the rear lockers. Once full they probably take up half of the locker space. Still plenty of room for jackets and such. No room for boards. If your boat is already plumbed for PNP then you should have two extra hoses that are plugged off and laying there in each locker.
These could be a good option for you as they are a bit smaller than what most guys run, seeing as you are still a bit under powered. I just need the bigger bags to help squat my rear end a bit more.

What’s this storage thing you speak of?... lol jk.

If you’re running 60% of offside ballast without pnp, that’s your problem right there. So you really aren’t running nearly enough weight to evenly weight the boat. Evenly weighted boat equals a super steep wave but it also equals a wave that’s rather small because you have less hull in the water displacing water. For my goofy side all I need is 200 lead on surf side and with a person or two I can run surf at 4 or 5 any day.

I don’t have capped off hoses run into those lockers, so I guess I’d have to see what it would take to plumb them.. I don’t use the weird *** bow storage, so I could throw our USCG vests under there. Might be doable..

I’ll look at what it takes to plumb them, see if I can sell the old lady on sticking them in the back, and you let me know when you’re ready to sell them, and what you want, and we’ll see if we can work something out!! Sounds like it may be worth looking at, at least!!

That makes sense.. I’ll try full, or mostly full ballast, all around, and stick all 500 lead in the back corner, this weekend.. maybe that bow lead was throwing us off on the bow rise, and also taking away from weight that would help with some extra lean. I think I need 200-300 more lead, either way.. it seems to be more effective since I can pile it in a smaller area, and get it all the way forward and back..

You have 500 lead? Go 200 in surf locker surf side and the rest spread evenly in rear lockers. If wave isn’t cleaning move peeps.

Yeah. I ran 150 of it in the bow, last weekend, and 350, surf side, in the locker..

I’ll give that a shot. It’s always a pain trying to move people, because we always have a decent size group, half of which are drinking and laying in the sun, so they don’t care about our wave.. the bigger guys surf, so we usually just move them around a little.

We can usually get a clean wave, it’s the size that we’re constantly chasing, but maybe that’s all being underweight and underpowered..

Finally found our limit, with that new prop this weekend. We were at 5200’, 8 people in the boat totaling about 1400 pounds in crew, 700 lead, and our 3000 ballast. Couldn’t hit 12 mph, with everything full.. could hit about 11, and moving an extra 100 in lead to the bow helped, but didn’t fix it.. ended up running full front ballast, and about 80% of the rear, which would let us barely see 12, it was pretty well maxed out at that point. I’m bummed to find that we can push the weight, once again, especially with a prop that’s 3” less pitch, but it’s still a major improvement over the last time we ran that lake with 7 people, 500 lead, and could only run 30% ballast..

I wonder how much elevation really plays into that. With all the people that would put you at the same weight that we have for ballast. What are your rpms?

What does all of that matter? Every boat has its weight limit. Lots of boats have waves that suffer with too much weight. The main question is, did you have a great wave and a great time? Or did the fact that you couldn't reach your max available weight ruin your day? Everytime we go out our wave gets better. And it's different each time. This time we ran the stock 3000, full PNP in the on side and almost empty PNP in the off side. We then had an extra bag that filled the entire surf locker. Then less than 500 in people weight. Boat pushed it easily and it's a lot less weight than I've ran in the past. Our main goal is a great wave with no lead.

We’ve run heavier crew at 4200’, with 100% ballast and same lead, and all was good.. I think that is around the highest we can run everything..

Think we’re 3800-4000 rpm around surf speeds...
