Need Your Tige Advice

I have a 30k max limit for a boat. Have wakeboarded a lot behind an old sea ray I/O. This will be our first Inboard V drive. I'm about to purchase a 2004 Tige 22v Riders edition. I want plenty of room for the family and I want to be able to surf and wakeboard. I love to ocean surf and river surf and am hoping to get a nice big clean wave.

Have read a lot about the Go Surf Assist system and will probably add that as well. If anyone has this system on their Tige I would love to hear your experience.

I have never been behind either boat but I have read good things about the surf wave online. I have a 2007 tige 22v that I can test drive tomorrow at a dealer but I don't know what year the hull changes on the 22v? Anyone know? I haven't found much online.

Finally I have also found Centurion Avalanches in a similar price range. Is the surf wave bette on these boats?

Would love to hear everyone's opinion on the boats I posted and suggestions on other boat models or brands that are I'm the same price range and may be better. I realize a lot of people have created great waves with the boats mentioned above by listing their boats and I definitely will upgrade ballast but want to know if these boats will create good waves with surf gates or go surf assist type systems and some ballast.

Welcome to the forum, there are LOTS of 22V and Ve' Owners here that I am sure will be able to answer the specifics for you. I am not sure of your boating background but here are some common things to look for when buying a V-drive boat:
DO A LAKE TEST, always test drive the boat you will buy. Any honest owner will insist on it as a selling point, be weary of those that won't.
All of these boats have a shaft seal where the prop shaft exits the hull this seal will drip a bit, some wont drip at all, just make sure its not gushing water.
Ballast-both boats had aftermarket ballast which is plus. Fill the ballast check for leaks, proper plumbing, and pumps are functioning properly.
Get any and all maintenance records find out when the impeller, oil, filters (oil/fuel), spark plugs, any maintenance was done. AND BY WHO
I noticed both boats had the good speed controllers on them so no worries about the "great speedset issue of 06'" (some of us are still living it)
Trailers are often forgotten...till they break. Check the tires, brakes, lights, bearings, bunks or rollers which ever it has and make sure the winch locks properly.

Both of these boats will produce well above average waves in their current state with their current ballast, so they are as you would say out of the box ready. I would personally hold off on the GSA upgrade. These boats already produce top quality waves, there are tons or arguments for and against the GSA...all valid. I would spend a summer with the boat surfing and boarding, then after a year if you are really dead set on getting a "Surf System" then by all means go for it but wouldn't make a 3K+ purchase on surf system for a boat that lets be honest you haven't even surfed behind yet. As a prior Centurion Owner myself, and ill be honest it took no time for me to quickly discard my Centurion for a Tige

Not sure about Tige's and Go Surf Assist but I have always found the MB B52 wave very similar to my 24V and it works well on the MB's. The listed wave on the 22V with big sacs is awesome!

22V is one of the best bang for your buck boats out there.

i had a 22v riders edition. It made a great surf and wakeboard wave. weight that back corner down as much as you can and list that sucker over and it make a awesome wave. look over that trailer very well especially if its the original one that came with the boat. crawl under it and look in the frame and all joints also the bottom of the cross members for corrosion and rust it was very common in those trailers. I would take the 22v if it was me. pm me if you have any questions.

Great advice thank you for your responses! I think waiting a or season testing the boat out is a great idea before adding a surf system. Does anyone know what years the hull design changed on the 22v? I don't want to get an 04 if in 06 the hull improved the surf wave significantly for example or the design is radically different.

To expand just a little. In 06, Tige released 2 new boats, the 22Ve and the 24ve. These were completely new boats from the keel up and a change to the old V hull. 06 was the last model year that older V hull was produced. IIRC, 03 was the first year of the 22V and the hull remained as is until it was retired in 06. Same with the Ve, no changes, just retired now. As to the surf wave, both produce a great surf wave and a very similar surf wave. They will handle a ton of ballast and are fairly easy to dial in and very forgiving.

one thing when I was looking, the thing I liked better on the VE is the transom, the V slopes into the boat and Ve is kinda cut out, for me with kids I def. prefer the VE. just food for thought.

I bought a 2006 22VE last spring, so I had the same questions as you in regards to the different hulls. As far as the wave goes I believe they are very similar (both very very good) in producing an awesome surf wave. Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly the underwater hull on the two models are identical, or at least very close. The main difference with the VE model is they added a flat spot with some compartments that you can sit on while putting on boards, etc. You can see it directly behind the engine compartment. The V's dont have this and that angled fiberglass makes it kind of awkward to put on boards, especially with kids, so I'm told. The VE model also has the walk through transom which is nice, and is also rated for more people. I personally liked the VE better for these reasons, but I was in the market for either one. I ended up finding a good deal on a VE, but would of went for a V if a deal came up.

The V and Ve hulls are close, but the Ve hull was a new mold, rather then a new deck on the old hull.

I know this is a Tige forum but I still want to hear your thoughts on a boat that is competing for my attention. I'm still considering the 22vs I posted above but they require traveling to pick them up which adds to the cost. It would cost a little less and I could put my own ballast system into it to weight it properly.

I see this boat is located in Idyllwild - if this is "local" to you, I would say there are better boats out there locally for your budget. Just my opinion. I'm personally critical of a boat with a swim step not taken care of. It's one of the easiest projects on a boat - so my thoughts are always "if they dont take care of the swim step, I wonder how well the rest of the boat has been maintained".
