    Replacement throttle control

    Hi All

My throttle control system has problems going into neutral. The little ring that you pull up and down no longer works - you don't need to pull it up in order to move the throttle into gear. My non-tige mechanic thinks this is the reason why my boat has problems starting. The starter motor will run but the engine doesn't turn over. So he thinks I need to replace my entire throttle system. Anyone has a spare/replacement?

If the starter is running then it can’t be the throttle lever.
If this lever is not in the correct position, it kills the power to the starter (with no power the starter will not run)
If the starter is running but not engaging the fly wheel, I would say you need a new starter.

Hi Whitlock87 - I agree with your thoughts on this and didn't really trust my mechanics opinion. However, when the starter motor is running, I see the fanbelts turning (fanbelts closest to the stern/back of boat) so I assume the flywheel is engaging. Is that right?

Ok now we are talking about something different.
If the belts are turning, then the starter is working correctly. The engine is turning over, but not starting.
This means you either don’t have spark or fuel. There was posts were the ignition switch (key switch) was not working correctly and the engine would turn over but not start.
I would put my money on an electrical issue (could just be a bad connection). You will need to find out if you are getting fuel (is the fuel pump running) and if you are getting spark. Once you find this out, it will tell you which way to go.
        Which engine do you have?

Thanks again Whitlock - I just changed the fuel pump and all the spark plugs cause I thought that was the cause of the problem. However, the problem still persists. At least I know its not the spark plugs and lack of fuel that is the issue. However, I dont know what is the cause of the problem. Any thoughts? I've got a Marine Power 57L GM Vortec engine. Its on a 2007 Tige RZ2

Do you know how to check for a spark?
Remove one of your spark plug wires from the spark plug. Place a metal screwdriver inside the cap and make sure the metal shaft is almost touching a metal part of the engine. Have somebody turn the engine over (like they are trying to start it) you should see a spark go from between the shaft of the screw driver and the engine. (Be careful, you can get zap doing this) If you see the spark, you have to have a fuel issue. If no spark, then you need to find out why.
Hopefully we can get chpthril or others to chime in.

You should use a spark plug to test for spark. Pull one out and ground the threads to the block. Much nicer to the electronics.

Thanks guys - tried again several times. The engine finally does start after lots of goes but it is really hard to start. So there is a spark being generated. When I changed the spark plugs, they did not seem to be too dirty.

                  Hi Everyone

Sorry for the delay in posting. The problem was the Neutral Sensor. The problem got so bad that the starter motor stopped working. It was on top of the transmission opposite the drivers side. There were two wires leading to two different screws. The screws were loose and when I tightened them, presto! We started no problems. I'll post some pics of where the Neutral Sensor is located and what you need to tighten. You will will need to lift off your back row seat and the wooden support underneath the seat to get access to your transmission. If you have long arms or a long screwdriver, you can reach it from the engine hatch.

There is a really useful post here where I found the solution to the problem: http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/arch...p/t-18329.html
