Ipod cable

Hey,

I installed a CMD5 in my '03 21i in the offseason, and we love it. I've got two issues that I need to resolve.

1. My Ipod cable hangs down in the storage area and is at risk of getting wet. Has anyone been able to figure out a clean way to pass that cable back into the glove box without a big ugly hole.

2. The CMD5 is smaller than XMD1 I pulled out and I have some screw holes that I need to fill in. Any recommendations on what I should use? Epoxy? Resin?

You can go with one of these remote AUX sockets pictured below. They come with both USB and 3.5mm headphone to RCA and just 3.5mm to RCA. With an extension RCA cable, they can be mounted anywhere, even the transom. Add a splitter and have 2.

Or, just use a grommet with an OD big enough to allow the cable to pass through and an ID small enough to keep the plug from dropping back through.

White bathtub caulk will make them pretty invisible, or you could fill then with tinted gel repair. But this would be a lot of work and require removing the head-unit again due to the wet-sanding that would be needed.

I think that would look great, but I see that that cable is for a USB to plug into the back of the HU. Do they make a cable with that lock nut system that will accept the cable that normally plugs into the bottom of the IPOD? I think the cable I installed is the CCA(?) cable and I needed that to be able to take control of the ipod with the HU.

I had similar issues. I left the holes from the XMD and forgot about them. For the iPod cable, I removed the grommet that was already there for the cigarette lighter plug and enlarged the hole enough to get the cable through and put the cigarette lighter back in place leaving enough slack in the cable.

That one that I pictured would work best for a head-unit that had a USB socket on the back. It is a combo socket, so if you have a USB head-unit, you can plug the MP3 player's data cable into the USB, or use a generic 3.5mm headphone cable in the other plug. It will not let you use your MP3's USB data cable to the RCA's. The USB socket goes through the USB cable and the 3.5mm headphone socket goes through the RCA cables.

Since your Clarion CMD5 does not have USB, the one with the 3.5mm headphone socket would be what you need. With the use of a double-ended 3.5mm cable, you can use any MP3 player.

I decided to keep my ipod out of sight since I can control it from my head unit. I just have the cable dressed around the amp cables and velcro my ipod to the amp where it is not in view. I did this because one of the places we go to the docks are isolated about 1/2 mile down a dirt/ gravel road to get to the boat so we don't normally leave ski's in rack or anything of value in plain sight. The resort owner monitors with a camera the dock triggered by a motion sensor which turns on the camera and sends a feed to his office.

Check Crutchfield. They stock iPod interfaces to various head units.

I bought the CNET adapter which gives me complete control of iPod from HU and track control from remotes. If I understand the Aux connection all you have is music to the aux input.

If you go with the CNET cable there is another adapter needed to charge G$ and newer Nano iPods.

$25 shipped as I can put it in a $4.95 USPS sm flat-rate. The USB combo is $30 shipped. IF you want to mount it on the drivers side, you're looking at about $10 for a set of RCA extension cables. Need to price a USB extension though.

I am really confused in regards to the Clarion CMD5.

The Clarion Manual indicates that the Ipod interfaces thought the CNET interface as I noted in this thread. It uses a CCA cable to do this.

From what I read in the Manual with iPod as a search it defined lots of reference on how to use in iPod mode which allows the HU to control the iPod.

What I did not find is any link to USB in the CMD5 manual I thought I read in a post that the CMD5 has a USB interface but per manual it does not.

chpthril might be able to clarify the USB reference or possibly this jarhead is just confused re: the statements seen.(normal state of mind). I use the CCA iPod cable and it works as described in the link above. Follow the yellow brick road.

The aux input to connect the iPod is definetly cheaper but does not provide iPod control. I used my aux input for a weekend and then bought the CCA interface as I described. (See link above)

You are correct, the CMD5 does not have USB, but the new-for-2010 CMD6 and the CMV series do, as well as the single DIN M309.

If the H/U says "interface" odds are it's going to be a proprietary data connection, such as Clarion's C-net. The problem is, most only work with Apple Ipod, and not all of them, so if you or a guest have some other MP3 device, such a Zun, you are SOL unless you also have the AUX socket installed. I know the 3.5mm headphone jack is not the best for sound quality, but it's better then not having the tunes at all.

No that most of the major player, ie Sony, Clarion, Alpine, Kennwood, have gone USB, you get the sound quality from the data link, but you can use just about any MP3 or even just a thumb drive.

The 2 head-units use the same cutout size, but the outer dimensions of the xmd is larger then the CMD, to a couple of the XMD's mounting screw holes will be visible.
