That is correct, the transom remote controls your head unit but often has fewer options/buttons. I have one by the steering wheel and one on the back of my boat by the swim deck. I did need to have a "Y" splitter in order to run both of my remotes to the head unit but they both work fine....

The CMD-5 has the old 6-pin cables, So along with a new media unit, you would need new remotes and extension cables.
